This Flu Season—Stop the Flu Before It Stops You!

Monday, November 23, 2015

Everyone knows that the flu is a serious illness, but it’s especially worrisome for people who are at high risk for flu complications, such as those with chronic conditions (i.e., weakened immune systems, heart/lung diseases, diabetes, etc.), those age 65 and over, pregnant women, and young children. Each year over 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and even more suffer from its symptoms (i.e., high fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, etc.).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most effective way to protect against the flu is with an annual flu vaccination—providing protection against flu types thought most likely to cause that season's flu. This vaccine is recommended for everyone, aged 6 months and older.

The sooner you can get your flus shot, the better—the best time to protect yourself is before the flu season begins. Most health plans, including FirstCare Health Plans, consider the flu vaccine as a preventive care service, providing it at no cost to you. Check your health plan for details.

Don’t delay—call your doctor today to schedule your flu vaccine!

This flu season, instead of spreading the influenza virus, let’s spread the word on how to protect each other from the flu.

To help raise awareness and for further details on this season’s flu vaccine and/or prevention tips, the CDC has created a page specifically for the 2015-2016 Flu Season. Click here to view the page.
