Save for Future Health Care Needs — Tax Free!

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is for people enrolled in high-deductible health plans (a medical plan with a deductible of $1,500 or more). Contributions are made pre-tax and what your employees don't use in a given year will carry over from year to year. HSAs are highly portable — your employees can take their HSA with them if they change jobs. The maximum contribution in 2017 for an HSA is $3,400 for individuals and $6,750 for families. Catch-up contributions for those age 55 or older are $1,000.

Your employees can have an HSA even if you choose not to offer one. The only caveat is that your employees must be enrolled in a high-deductible health plan. Your employees don't pay taxes on the money going into an their HSA, funds grow on tax-deferred, and they can use the money tax-free to pay for qualified medical expenses.
