Our goal is to give you quality care and a great network of doctors, specialists, and hospitals. STAR members receive Medicaid health care benefits, including free Texas Health Steps medical and dental checkups.

What is STAR?

STAR is a  Medicaid program for  low-income families, children, and pregnant women. When you join STAR, you pick a primary care provider to manage your health care and treatment. You can pick any primary care provider in FirstCare’s STAR network. Your primary care provider can be a family doctor, general practitioner, obstetrician/gynecologist, internist, pediatrician, or a clinic.

Value-Added Services 

• Help getting a ride to doctor visits.
• Up to $150 above basic benefit for frames every 2 years for members age 20 and under.
• One discount coupon once each year for over-the counter medicine.
• One sports/school physical each year for members age 18 and under.
• Pre-programmed cell phone for high-risk pregnant members during pregnancy.
• Free 500 minute pre-paid phone card to call your doctor or FirstCare.
• One allergy-free pillow cover every 2 years for those with an asthma-related illness within the last 18 months.
• One air purifier every 2 years for members in the Asthma Disease Management Program.
• Free pregnancy/birthing classes and education for pregnant members.
• Home visits for members enrolled in the Diabetes Disease Management Program.
• Two extra food counseling visits above the basic benefits for certain members.
• Weight Watchers program membership for members enrolled in the Obesity Disease Management Program.
• Free stop smoking program for members 18 and over.
• Free diaper bag for pregnant members.
• Baby shower for pregnant members who receive all pregnancy visits from enrollment to delivery.
• Free pregnancy handbook and pregnancy calendar for pregnant members.
• Free car seat for pregnant members who complete a pregnancy visit within 30 days of enrollment.
• Gift of health items for members age 20 and under who get a timely Texas Health Steps checkup.
• $50 gift card for members with an obesity diagnosis who come within a normal body mass index while enrolled with FirstCare.
• Two free movie tickets for members with diabetes who have 6 continuous months of a normal HbA1c.
• One extra foot doctor (podiatry) visit each year above the basic benefit for members age 18 and older.

• Parking at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock (east parking garage).
• Child care at Covenant Child Development Center in Lubbock. Call FirstCare at 1-800-431-7798 to learn more.
• Diaper coupon for those who complete and return a pregnancy health questionnaire within four weeks. 
• Diaper bag for mothers of newborn babies who visit with a FirstCare health educator.
• 3 meals a day for one parent of a child in the hospital. Covenant hospitals only.
